Curated With Love: A Valentine's Playlist

By Maryjane Perez | 12 February 2024

Happy love month! This is arguably one of the best times of the year: an entire month to remind us of the beautiful experience of giving and receiving love. Plus, everything is pink, red, and heart-shaped – a perfect assortment!

As Valentine’s Day approaches, so does the need for the perfect soundtrack to accompany this year’s season of loving, crushing, or self loving.

If you’re in the mood for love struck tunes, these first 5 tracks are just for you! These songs convey the messy range of emotions that come with experiencing feelings of love and infatuation.

  1. Oh Honey - The Delegations

With shimmering instrumentals and a groovy rhythm, this song immediately catapults listeners into a world of pure devotion. It professes the power love has to heal us. “Yea, when my poor heart is breakin’ apart / She’ll put it back together.” A perfect tune for all the lovers out there.

  1. Sugar Sugar - The Archies

This song is absolute bubblegum pop bliss. It’s full of sweet sentiments, catchy lyrics, and playful beats that perfectly encapsulate the enchanting feelings of newfound love. Admittedly, this is a cheesy song, but Valentine’s Day is the exception for being cheesy.

  1. Hungry Eyes - Eric Carmen

Of course, I had to take the opportunity to throw in a song from one of the best soundtracks ever (Dirty Dancing). The sense of urgency and desperation in this song is relatable for anyone who has felt instantly attracted to someone else. Now I've got you in my sights / With these hungry eyes / One look at you and I can't disguise / I've got hungry eyes.” It’s all about the excitement of the chase.

  1. I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) - Four Tops

As we all know, the heart wants what it wants. This song perfectly depicts, for lack of better terms, what it feels like to be “down bad” for someone. “Do anything you ask me to (Ask me to) / Can't help myself / I want you and nobody else.” The upbeat sound of this song contrasts with the straining vocals and almost pathetic lyrics.

  1. You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac

If there is one thing Fleetwood Mac does well, it’s crafting the most captivating songs imaginable and this one is all about being cast under a love spell. In true Fleetwood Mac fashion, this song features groovy guitars, glimmering chimes, and tender lyrics.

If you’re in the mood for more lighthearted music for Galetine’s fun, the thrill of a new crush, exciting intimate moments these five songs may be more of your pace.

  1. Dance the Night - Dua Lipa

Sometimes the best way to spend a night out, or in, is to go dancing with friends. This is the perfect track for Galentine plans. This disco-esque pop song sparkles with danceable beats and carefree lyrics. Dance the night away with Lipa’s lively vocals.

  1. CUFF IT - Beyonce

Keeping the same upbeat pace of the previous song, this song is sure to boost spirits. It adds a playful element to the themes of love and intimacy. I wanna go where nobody's been (wanna go where nobody's been) / Have you ever had fun like this? (Have you ever had fun? Yeah).”

  1. Paper Rings - Taylor Swift

Crushes can be intoxicating, so if that’s what you’re experiencing this time around, this song is for you. Swift always knows how to capture intense feelings in a bubbly and bright sound. She offers punchy vocals as she sings, Kiss me once 'cause you know I had a long night / Kiss me twice 'cause it's gonna be alright / Three times 'cause I've waited my whole life.” This track is perfect for karaoke or a car sing-along on your way to whatever plans you find yourself in this Valentine’s Day.

  1. Man! I Feel Like A Woman - Shania Twain

Let’s go girls! This is such a feel-good song that will amplify a good mood. “The best thing about bein’ a woman / Is the prerogative to have a little fun.” This season of love is all about having fun with your platonic soulmates as well.

  1. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

Ending on a high note, Lauper’s classic 80s hit is sure to get the girls dancing and singing along. Celebrate love by spending the day with your closest friends doing all the things that bring you joy.

Remember that this time of year can be enjoyable whether you’re dating or single. It’s all about love, in all its forms.
