[TNS]: The aesthetics and art surrounding the band seem to be a big part of the way you present yourselves. Is that a conscious decision/conversation that you all have surrounding the band and its artistic visions?
[ELIZA KLATT]: It's always been something really important to us, and it's always really thought through and planned. We're often creatively spontaneous, but a lot of the visual direction comes from Kurt and I. We take a lot of pride in it so it's nice of you to notice!
[TNS]: From a fan perspective, are there specific artists that inspire you all individually or as a band and how do you feel that has impacted where the band is now?
[EK]: I think as a group our music tastes vary a lot, but there are definitely bands we all enjoy together. The 1975 is one of them, and we were lucky enough to see them at Madison Square Garden a few days ago on our day off in New York City. It was such a fun experience for us as friends and bandmates, especially because we all love and admire that band and have for a really long time.
[TNS]: What got you all into music and was it always something that brought you all together?
[EK]: We all have very different experiences and histories of how we started playing music. Personally, I always had a love for music and bands. When I saw Coldplay in concert in 2008 I remember telling myself that that's what I wanted to be able to do someday. I think we're all lucky enough to share the same passion and long term goals for our careers and the band, and I think our passion for touring and songwriting is what keeps us strong.
[TNS]: Eliza and Kurt have songwriting credits on all of your songs, but could you speak a bit to how the creative process looks like within the band and between band members?
[EK]: All of the songs are written by Kurt and I, and we usually start with a voice memo on our phones. Sometimes it'll be something Kurt has written, or an idea that I've come up with, but when it comes to demoing and fleshing them out it's really collaborative between the two of us. We go through the songs as a band and record them all together in the studio when they're ready to be recorded.
[TNS]: You’re currently in the middle of a pretty extensive US tour. What has it been like to be in front of these audiences all over the country? Have you had a favorite show so far?
[EK]: It's been really great, we've been looking forward to this for such a long time and we feel really grateful and lucky to be back on the road with our friends Silversun Pickups. It's also been exciting to finally visit a lot of the places we were supposed to visit in 2020, particularly on the east coast! I think a collective favourite for us was House of Blues in Boston, the crowd just had such an amazing energy and I don't think we'll ever forget it.
[TNS]: How would you explain the band’s relation to your fanbase and its evolution from the beginnings of the band to now? Could you speak a bit to what your fanbase means to you as a band but also possibly as fans of other artists yourselves?
[EK]: We're really grateful for our fans. I think the last year and a bit we've really been able to see our fanbase at our own shows particularly across Australia, and the crowds have been so much fun and respectful of everyone around them (which is a big thing for us). When we've had a chance to meet fans everyone has been so lovely, and we feel very lucky to have such a cool and fun fanbase and community supporting our band. We also recently started up a discord, which has been a really cool way to be more personable with fans.
[TNS]: If you had to pick one of your songs to perform or play for the rest of your lives what would it be and why?
[EK]: For me it's "Halloween." It's one of my favourite songs from the album and I just love playing it on stage. I can see it being in our set for a long time.
[TNS]: If you had to describe the band’s sound or vibe in one word what would it be?
[EK]: Nostalgic.
[TNS]: What advice would you give aspiring musicians and songwriters from your experiences so far?
[EK]: Always follow your gut feeling on things and create the music you want to make. No matter what you're always going to be the one that cares about your music or project the most, so at the end of the day you should always do what makes you happy.
[TNS]: Decades from now when you are looking back at your career as a band, what would you hope to have left behind? What do you hope will be your impact, whether that be on the music industry itself or in general?
[EK]: I hope that we inspire upcoming artists the way that my favourite bands have always inspired me, whether that be through our music, visuals and aesthetic or live shows!
