Take a Trip to "Malibu" with The Driver Era

By: Britney McVey | 10 August, 2022

If you are like me and haven’t found the perfect feel-good summer anthem yet, then The Driver Era's newest release, ‘Malibu’ is exactly what you are looking for. The duo consists of brothers Rocky and Ross Lynch, who initially started the band while on tour in 2018 with R5. While they have established themselves in the Alternative and Indie genres, “Malibu” takes on a more nostalgic pop vibe.

The track begins with attention-grabbing echoes that lead into a relaxing guitar rhythm played by Rocky. After being joined by a series of evocative beats, Ross starts off the first verse; “All day cuz I don’t know better / All day bettin on a chance / Don't wanna watch you slip through my hands/ Off the ground like we used to dance / Remember how we never had no plans.” The melodic tone instantly drew me in and made me recall sunkissed and sandy memories, setting the scene for a blissful experience.

“'Malibu' is about reminiscing on experiences in the best locations," the duo states, "It's about getting away. It's the spontaneous trip you take with someone -- maybe you knew them before, or maybe you're meeting them for the first time."

If you weren’t already daydreaming about a special place or person, it would be hard not to after hearing the brothers talk about the single. However, if you needed a visual to aid your imagination, the music video, produced by Tate Warner, features both Ross and Rocky in the California sand with their summer loves. After seeing Ross bask in the warmth of the sunlight while Rocky is sitting on the cliffside, an impromptu adventure with your friends may need to happen.

The chorus continues the earning for a summer rendezvous through the lyrics, “Show me the light / Deep in your eyes / I can't deny/ That's paradise/ Right here in Malibu.” It is clear that the Lynch Brothers are sophisticated lyrically and have produced a piece that has exceeded any standards set by fans. The lyrics provide vivid descriptions to help immerse yourself into what it feels like to find paradise, or a great backtrack for your all-out dance moment if that is more your style.

After listening to 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the ultimate summer soundtrack, you can keep your eyes peeled for the group's upcoming album, ‘Summer Mixtape’, releasing on September 16th. If you can’t wait that long, The Driver Era is currently on tour with Summer Salt and Almost Monday where you can hear more from the masterminds of ‘Malibu.’
